NewsDepth: Wednesday, October 28, 2009
Animal rescuers rushed to save the lives of hundreds of sea birds on the west coast. Since last week, the Wildlife Center of the North Coast has been inundated with hundreds of rescued seabirds. A mysterious algae foam off-shore is causing the birds to loose their waterproofing, so they end up cold and dying on the beach. Experts with the International Bird rescue Research Center out of northern California came to pick up the birds, loading them first onto a U-Haul, and then, onto a U.S. Coast Guard C-130. The rescue center specializes in treating birds hurt in oil spills. The birds were cleaned up by volunteers.

Opponents say it's an effort to head off more rigorous oversight that would really protect animals. But, supporters say Issue Two would protect farming and the food supply from animal rights activists. To get a better sense of how farm animals are now treated, ideastream®'s David C. Barnett paid a visit to a Wayne County farm and Morning Edition host Eric Wellman spoke with OSU Animal Behaviorist, Candace Croney.

Series

The Return of the Cuyahoga
Return of the CuyahogaThe Return of the Cuyahoga is a fascinating look at the life, death and rebirth of one of America’s most polluted rivers. Perhaps best known as “the river that burned,” the Cuyahoga is, in fact, an emblematic waterway. Its history is the history of the American frontier, the rise of industry, and the scourge of pollution. In 1969, when the river caught on fire, the blaze ignited a political movement that not only saved the Cuyahoga and its communities, but continues today with the current environmental movement. More information about the movie, which premiered April 22, 2008 on WVIZ/PBS, is available here.
