Diabetes: The Constant Shadow
The stories of Northeast Ohioans who cope daily with the “constant shadow” of diabetes will be revealed through their rigorous routines of blood glucose monitoring, constant insulin injections and dietary management of the disease to avoid the dramatic fluctuations of blood sugar. Noted medical experts will explain the causes of this complicated disease, how it affects the eyes, kidneys, heart and other organs, often with dire consequences. And, we’ll learn about the newest and most advanced treatments for managing and preventing the disease.

Confronting Colon Cancer
Hosted by ideastream’s Rick Jackson, the show follows the stories of several people in Northeast Ohio who are confronting colon cancer. Nearly every phase of this disease is explored—from detection to diagnosis, from treatment to steps anyone can take to decrease their chances of getting this disease.

Canal Fulton Dental Practice Collects Halloween Goodies for Troops

Patients visited the office of dentist Leonard Modugno on Sunday - but not with a tooth ache. The patients were trying to keep their teeth healthy while they helped with a good cause. Dr. Modugno is one of a number of dentists in Ohio and the country who are participating in the Halloween Candy Buy Back. He offered kids and adults one dollar for every pound of candy they brought in. The dental office collected more than 250 pounds of candy. All the donated candy will be sent to U.S. troops serving at home and overseas. Besides the gift of candy, the troops will also receive toothbrushes.

Cleveland Zoo Gorillas Try a Healthier Diet

The Cleveland Zoo's male gorillas - Bebac and Mokolo - are eating healthier these days. The two western lowland gorillas underwent check-ups on October tenth, to see how their hearts were doing. Like many male gorillas that live in zoos, both Bebac and Mokolo are fighting heart disease, so the veterinarians at the zoo are trying a new diet. Gone are the processed biscuits, a long time staple for gorillas in zoos. Instead, their diet will now include apples, bananas, flax seed and lots of healthy greens.

Tuesday Checkup: Battling Crohn’s disease

There's a disease that affects between one and two million Americans, but it's not talked about because it's embarrassing. No one knows exactly what causes Crohn's disease or how to cure it. Patients often feel cramps or flu-like symptoms. For many people, the symptoms can be controlled with the right medications, but for others Crohn's disease can be a lifelong struggle and some endure risky medications in order to alleviate the pain. Dr. Jeffrey Katz is a gastroenterologist at University Hospitals and a leading expert in Crohn's disease. He spoke with ideastream®'s Eric Wellman.

President Obama Declares Flu Emergency; H1N1 Vaccine in Short Supply

President Obama has declared a national H1N1 emergency; as thousands of Americans fight the flu bug. The President said that with communities across the country dealing with sick people and vaccination programs, declaring an emergency would help them to take care of patients more quickly. Health workers have been giving the vaccine to people as quickly as they receive it, but so far this fall, supplies have been limited. U.S. Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says that the vaccine is being distributed "as fast as it comes off the production line," and adds that supplies of the vaccine were not as large as predicted. So why are flu defense supplies so little - and so late? One answer might be because we use a 50-year-old technology to produce flu vaccine with eggs. Some school districts are re-thinking their perfect attendance policies. Parents of students at the Bradley Garden School in Bridgewater, New Jersey were pleased by the district's decision to suspend all student awards for perfect attendance, in an effort to encourage sick children to stay home.
