The average human heart weighs less than a pound, and yet it is the most important muscle in your body. Heart Stories: Confronting the #1 Killer, shares the stories of three northeast Ohioans and their family members who have confronted heart disease - the nation’s number one cause of natural death.

Diabetes: The Constant Shadow
The stories of Northeast Ohioans who cope daily with the “constant shadow” of diabetes will be revealed through their rigorous routines of blood glucose monitoring, constant insulin injections and dietary management of the disease to avoid the dramatic fluctuations of blood sugar. Noted medical experts will explain the causes of this complicated disease, how it affects the eyes, kidneys, heart and other organs, often with dire consequences. And, we’ll learn about the newest and most advanced treatments for managing and preventing the disease.

Confronting Colon Cancer
Hosted by ideastream’s Rick Jackson, the show follows the stories of several people in Northeast Ohio who are confronting colon cancer. Nearly every phase of this disease is explored—from detection to diagnosis, from treatment to steps anyone can take to decrease their chances of getting this disease.

In the Cleveland Public Schools, almost 2,000 students are homeless. That means about 1% of the district's total student population struggles with food and shelter problems. With many more students eligible for free or reduced price lunches, school officials say "food insecurity" influences not only the personal lives of students but their academic success as well. This fall, the Cleveland Food Bank stepped in, starting two pilot programs in the city to give needy students backpacks full of food for their weekends. ideastream's Lisa Ann Pinkerton reports.
