U.S. Census Bureau Will Spend Millions to Follow Up on Unreturned Census Forms
NewsDepth: Wednesday, March 10, 2010
April first isn't just April Fools Day - it's Census Day. That's when every person in the country will be counted, and it's an expensive undertaking. Billions of dollars are at stake for communities, and the Census Bureau will spend thousands of dollars to make sure each person is counted. The 2000 Census had a 72% return rate, and census officials are hoping to match that this year. It will cost about $3,000 to follow up on each unreturned census form. The government could spend as much as $85 million in follow-up efforts, money officials would rather spend on communities, which is why it is asking everyone to mail back the forms. Don’t forget to take the NewsDepth Census on our website.

What’s Riding on the Census
The Sound of Ideas: Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Many Ohioans have just received a letter from the U.S. Census office, reminding them that the ten-year census is just around the corner. For a region facing a population decline, the stakes are high: some cities may see their numbers fall below the threshold for certain kinds of federal funding. And the final tally will determine not only the number of districts Ohio gets in the next Congress, but also the amount of money every county gets for providing human services. Wednesday morning at 9, join host Dan Moulthrop for a conversation about what's at stake in the coming census.
