Clevelander Finds Success in Comedy: An Interview with Andy Borowitz
Around Noon: Monday, August 7, 2000
When Andy Borowitz was a student in the Shaker Heights school system, he found that cracking jokes was a sport at which he could excel. As an adult, he's made millions of people crack up as one of the creators, writers and producers of the series starring Will Smith, "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air." Borowitz also wrote for the cult hit "Square Pegs," the Emmy-nominated series "Day by Day" and the Oscar-nominated film "Pleasantville," as well as contributing to numerous humor columns to the New Yorker Magazine, the New York Times and TV Guide. He's recently published two new books, "Rationalizations to Live By," from Workman Publishing, and "The Trillionaire Next Door: The Greedy Investor's Guide to Daytrading" from Harper Press. Borowitz stopped by our studios recently on a book tour that brought him back home. And he told Dee Perry how he came to realize that being funny could actually be his life's work.

An Art Reborn: Modern Japanese Prints from the AMAM Collection
Around Noon: Thursday, June 8, 2000
The art of education is on display now at Oberlin College, the home of the Allen Memorial Art Museum. It is here where select Oberlin art history students get the chance to play the role of curator, learning what it takes to put together an exhibition for a nationally renowned museum. Recently, Oberlin senior Adrianna Del Collo put together the dynamic exhibit "An Art Reborn: Modern Japanese Prints from the AMAM Collection." Around Noon's Dee Perry paid a visit to the Allen and spoke with Adrianna and her supervisor, Charles Mason, Curator of Asian Art.

Jazz Tracks host Bobby Jackson spoke to Mr. Brubeck during the summer of 2000 on a variety of subjects.
The Memorial Oaks: Maintaining the Memorial, Memories
Around Noon: Friday, May 26, 2000
Since the founding of the state of Israel in 1948, the practice of planting trees as gesture of remembering those who have died remains to this day. Trees are seen as a renewal and continuation of life. Decades prior to the beginning of the Jewish state though, the city of Cleveland embarked on tree planting unlike any other. In 1919, some 850 oak trees were planted in memory of those killed in World War I. The plantings began by what is now Gordon Park, at the beginning of Martin Luther King Blvd., and wind up in Shaker Heights.
The Church of the SubGenius
Around Noon: Wednesday, May 24, 2000
This year, the cofounder of a very unusual religion set up shop in Cleveland. The Church of the SubGenius has had a following around town for years-nationwide its members number in the thousands. But this church is less about spirit than satire. The Reverend Ivan Stang preaches a message of salvation for the sluggish. (Some call it heresy! Others call it–funny!) Often you'll find him performing with the Church's Un-Official House Band, Einstein's Secret Orchestra. 90.3's April Baer has this profile of Reverend Stang and his do-it-yourself approach to salvation.
On the Road at Oberlin College
Around Noon: Friday, May 19, 2000
Our intrepid band of "Around Noon" staffers-Host and Producer Dee Perry, Assistant Producer Dave DeOreo, and Technical Producer/Engineer Jeff Carlton, pulled into the Finney Chapel parking lot at Oberlin College, ready to begin another "on the road" adventure. The idea behind these occasional excursions is to reach out to the show's existing audience (wherever they may be), to discover new listeners in the process, and to get out into the sunshine whenever possible!
