Budget Challenges Force School Districts to Close Buildings, Lay Off Staff
NewsDepth: Wednesday, March 17, 2010
The challenges facing our schools are also in the headlines this week. Drastic measures are being taken in some of the nation's school districts where money is so tight that programs are being cut, teachers are losing their jobs, and schools are closing. The Kansas City, Missouri School District announced that it will close nearly half of the district’s 61 schools. Students and parents in Des Moines, Iowa protested a plan to cut hundreds of teaching jobs, many of them in the music and art departments. More cuts are expected this week in Detroit, where the school board is expected to announce 40 school closings. The problem extends further than Kansas City and Detroit. Here in Ohio, the school board for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District approved a plan last week that will close or move sixteen schools by this fall.
