While the contributions of Cleveland's steel industries to WWII are better-known, Akron's rubber industry was also critical to the war effort. David C. Barnett tells how Goodyear, Goodrich, Firestone, General and Mohawk backed the military in various ways, including bullet-proof tires, barrage balloons, self-sealing gas tanks, and blimps that dropped depth charges on submarines.

The unique experience of one Northeast Ohio couple during the war years is explored: Ed and Mimi Ormond met in England during the war and bombs went off, literally, during the honeymoon that blasted them off their bed. He took his violin with him and because of that got assigned to a military band instead of a combat position. He later became a violinist for the Cleveland Orchestra; she became a Beachwood school teacher.

60 miles west of Cleveland - in Sandusky - a 99 acre campus is home to more than 700 Veterans from America's 20th century wars, including World War II. As the Ken Burns documentary "The War" concludes, ideastream's Rick Jackson takes us to Erie County.
