  Grades 6-8 Lessons:

Aquatic Roots
Standards Alignment: Grades 4-8
Topics: Diversity & Interdependence of Life, Interactions, Evolutionary Theory, Heredity, Introduced vs. Native Species, Nature of Energy
Lesson Synopsis: Students use reference materials to research various local aquatic plants, or animals, to find out whether they are natives or exotics and to investigate their effects on people, other animals, and the environment.

Benthic Bugs and Bioassessment
Standards Alignment: Grades 6-8
Topics Covered: Diversity & Interdependence of Life, Heredity
Lesson Synopsis: Students investigate the relative water quality of a stream by conducting a simulated bioassessment by sampling aquatic macroinvertebrates (represented by ordinary materials).

Blue Ribbon Niche

Standards Alignment: Grades 4-8
Topics Covered: Earth Systems, Diversity & Interdependence of Life, Habitats, Interactions, Food Webs, Evolutionary Theory, Heredity
Lesson Synopsis: Students create a variety of representations of wildlife that can be found in riparian zones using a variety of art materials.

Designing a Habitat
Standards Alignment: Grades 3-8 (Heavy Hitter for gr. 7)
Topics Covered: Earth Systems, Diversity & Interdependence of Life, Habitats, Interactions, Heredity
Lesson Synopsis: Students design a habitat suitable for aquatic wildlife to survive in a zoo or an aquarium.

Habitat Pen Pals
Standards Alignment: Earth and Space Science, Life Science, grades 3-8
Topics Covered: Earth Systems, Diversity & Interdependence of Life, Characteristics & Structure of Life, Heredity
Lesson Synopsis: From icy tundra to scorching deserts to salty oceans, the world’s habitats are diverse and fascinating. Each habitat, with its own special set of conditions, supports animals and plants adapted to living in it. By becoming “habitat pen pals”, your students will learn about the diversity of habitats around the world, and will write letters from the perspective of organisms living in these habitats.

Micro Odyssey
Standards Alignment: Grades 7-8
Topics Covered: Diversity & Interdependence of Life, Habitats, Food Webs, Interactions, Heredity
Lesson Synopsis: Students will examine, draw, paint, and identify microorganisms that live in pond water.

Water Address
Standards Alignment: Grades 3-8
Topics Covered: Earth Systems, Life Science, Diversity of Interdependence and Life, Evolutionary Theory, Heredity
Lesson Synopsis: Students identify plants and animals and their habitats by analyzing clues that describe water related adaptations of aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
